Our Leak Detection Services Include:
The Two Types Of Leaks To Look Out For
Overt, or obvious leaks are relatively easy to spot. However, unfortunately, many homeowners also find them very easy to overlook. These annoying little issues can be a dripping faucet, a leak under a sink or even a toilet that runs from time to time. All are wasting water and money, but they are all also a signal that something worse could be on the horizon. Small leaks and drips never remain small. At some point, the valve will ultimately fail, or the pipe will burst, leaving you with an expensive water damage repair and plumbing expense.
The leaks that you don’t see also hold the potential to create significant expenses and a big mess, mostly because it takes you a while to discover them. These are small leaks that are not visible and must be found when a large water bill arrives, or there is finally a noticeable drop in your water pressure. Also, unfortunately, the leak is often concealed underneath your slab foundation. As soon as you even think that you have a slab leak, a call to (714) 839-9179 to schedule emergency service is necessary. The longer you wait to call Tweedy Plumbing, the higher the risk of extensive water damage and even the growth of toxic black mold.
What Is A Slab Leak?
When your home is built on a concrete slab, the plumbing pipes run up through the concrete and are attached to it. When the slab moves, expands, or shifts, it can create a crack in your plumbing pipe. These leaks are called slab leaks, and they are often hard to locate as the water runs under the concrete and goes to ground rather than creating a noticeable puddle.
How Are Slab Leaks Detected And Located?
You can often determine that there is a hidden slab leak by shutting off all of the water using appliance in your home and all of the faucets and showers. With no water being used in the house, observe your water meter. If the meter shows any water flowing, then there is a leak in a pipe somewhere. If you have not found a wet area in your home, then that leaves the plumbing pipes under the foundation as the most likely location for the leak.
At Tweedy Plumbing, our plumbers can isolate the pipes under your home to conduct a pressure test to be sure that is where the leak is located. The next step is to zero in on the exact location of the leak. Our team uses the latest in leak detection technology to listen for the leak. Sound amplifying tools allow us to follow the sound of running water to find the exact location of the leak.
Repair Options For Slab Leaks
In the perfect world, the leak is near the edge of your slab foundation, and we can dig under the concrete to access and repair the leak. This process is very cost-effective and causes no additional damage to your home. If we are not able to reach the leak from under the slab, the next option is to eliminate the leaking pipe and re-pipe through the walls or attic of your home. This will take a bit more time but is an excellent solution to the current issue and eliminates the potential for another slab leak in the same pipe in the future.
Our last option is to cut a small hole in the concrete slab to access the pipe and to make the repair. While this does require a bit more mess inside your home, rest assured that we will patch the concrete after the repair is completed and tested. We will always do our best to leave your home in the condition that we found it, or even better if possible.
